Cutting Loose From the Nine to Five

In order to break out you need to cut loose from the nine to five mentality.

I was discussing this recently with someone who runs his own small business online and feels that he’s not understood by those around him.

Cutting Loose From the Nine to Five

This person feels surrounded by what he calls “factory workers” – people who just stick to the daily plod, the nine to five.

Who regard nine to five plodding as a virtue, who don’t appreciate or approve of anything or anyone who is doing anything different to that – and he’s finding this to be a downer.

Most People Are Plodders

The term “factory workers” doesn’t have to be taken literally. Most people in the Western world nowadays are actually office workers, but – same difference. In the West, office work is the new factory work.

When I worked in offices the people I encountered were pretty much the same as the old factory worker stereotype. It makes not a jot of difference whether you are blue collar or white collar.

The fact is that the majority of people think like this. It’s just the way they are. Only a minority think and act differently. There are leaders and there are followers, the risk takers and the risk avoiders. I mean in terms of what people are willing to undertake in life. Probably the majority of the population are the followers and risk avoiders.

The employee mentality is all about being a “plodder”. Not taking any risks, or what they see as risks even though it’s actually a big risk being an employee dependent on one employer, putting all your eggs in one basket.

But the majority prefer to be plodders.

It’s always been that way, right back to feudalism. When the serfs were freed and allowed to leave the village for the city and get paid jobs as employees working for cash, the majority probably preferred to stay where they were, plodding along working on the master’s fields under his control from dawn til dusk.

Most people just seek to plug their umbilical cord into an employer and let someone else make all the decisions and provide for them. That’s all they wish for in life. Maybe it’s even something deep in our human DNA. Risk avoidance, taking the easy way in life, avoiding danger.

That’s ok if that’s what they want, and I think most do, but it’s never been what I want and it never will be. Maybe you’re the same?

Felix Dennis on “Cutting Loose”

I’ve just finished reading a book by the English magazine publisher and multi-millionaire maverick Felix Dennis called “How to Get Rich”.

One thing Felix says is that you have to “cut loose” from the herd if you are going to be an entrepreneur.You have to accept the difference between us and them – the entrepreneurs and the “factory workers”. The “factory workers” will tie you down, they will conspire to prevent you leaving the nest.

According to Felix, the reasons are partly fear that you will upset the existing pecking order. And partly the fear that you will expose them and their lives by showing that you can do things differently and better.

That you will show them that it can be done, that it’s possible to live a successful life without having to be a “factory worker”. Being shown up by a “renegade” is what they fear.

Online Entrepreneurs Are The Worst Kind

There’s a further problem when you are running a business in the e-commerce sector.

In my experience a lot of people just don’t understand e-commerce or online marketing. They know next to nothing about what we do, and from what little they think they know, they don’t approve of.

Entrepreneurs and marketers often take a tough rap in general. Marketing is often seen as something to do with as exploiting, trickery, advantage-taking or people out for the quick buck. There seems to be a dislike of online entrepreneurs especially.

So if you’re an online marketer then you’re probably yet one floor further down in the devil’s basement in the eyes of some.

Many people think online business is something to do with outsmarting Google in some way, or else some sort of spam activity.

I myself have experienced these responses from people in my personal and social circle, so I have first hand experience of it.

I’ve received prejudiced reactions when I’ve talked with acquaintances or people in my own personal circle about my business contacts.

For example when I mentioned to someone that the guy who runs the online marketing coaching group I belong to used to previously be sales and marketing manager for a car dealership.

I could see the “car dealer = dodgy character” warning sign instantly going up in their eyes.

And so on.

Cut Loose From The Nine-to-Fivers

I too have had to “cut loose” from some people.

Whether it’s just avoiding mentioning the issue, or in some cases, cutting off contact completely in a few cases, I’ve been through it and I’m still going through it now.

But there’s no alternative if you are determined not to be a “factory worker”. You have to keep on going. You can’t break out without cutting loose. You have to avoid the negs and the nay-sayers and their influence.

Despite the cheesy title (it’s meant with a bit of irony), “How to Get Rich” by Felix Dennis is a brilliant book. Felix Dennis is a rebel, someone who refused to swallow the nine to five bull, and has done something far better with his life instead.
