Should I Start A Blog?

blogging_ideas_by_owenwbrownMany people ask if they should start a blog when they are launching their own business.

Especially if it’s an online business, people wonder whether they should also start a blog.

Blogging can be fun and enjoyable, especially if you like writing.

Some people recommend taking up blogging as a kind of personal accountability or “entrepreneur’s progress” type of exercise.

But in the majority of cases, I’d advise against starting a blog if these are the main reasons you want to blog.

If you want to blog for the sake of blogging, then fine. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t maintain a blog if that’s what you want to do.

But setting up a blog website  just so you can blog about your business journey is something I don’t recommend for most people.

Blogs Have a Heavy Overhead

The big problem with blogs is that they are very time-consuming.

And the tendency with a blog is for this time overhead to increase. There are always more features to add to a blog, more posts to write. The tasks involved with maintaining a blog never cease.

A blog for many people can also become an inflated ego-project. You compare yourself with other bloggers and you can find yourself striving to compete.

All this activity means time and effort you could be spending on running your business.

A Blog is Not a Business

The other thing is it can be all too easy to confuse a blog with the actual business.

They’re not the same.

A blog is just a blog. It can be a business, but in most cases, the blog is not the business. It’s just a means of self-expression and communication.

Another reason not to start a blog is that personal accountability and entrepreneur’s personal journey type blogs are now a dime a dozen. The world doesn’t need yet another entrepreneur’s blog.

If You Just Want to Blog, Start a Journal – Not a Blog

If you just want to blog for the sake of it, then rather than start a blog, I’d recommend you start a diary or journal if you don’t already maintain one. Just for yourself.

A diary or journal has many advantages over a blog. For a start it’s a lot less time consuming.

What’s more, because it’s private you can be totally honest about everything – and it can’t become a vanity project.

Your journal doesn’t have to be in paper form. You can easily maintain it on your computer – or online if you prefer.

You can even set it up as a private password protected blog, using the free blogging services of WordPress.com or Blogger.com if you wish.

Are There Any Good Business Reasons For Starting a Blog?

Yes, definitely.

There are at least three sound main business reasons to start a blog that I can think of.

A Blog Can Help You Reach Your Target Market

If you’re starting an online business, for example in affiliate marketing, then a blog may be the best way to reach your target audience.

Also, for some products and services aimed at very narrow and specific markets, a blog is an ideal way to communicate with that niche.

In this case, the blog IS in a sense the business. Or at least, it’s the marketing vehicle through which your business can sell to your audience.

A Blog Can Help Your Website Attract More Visitor Traffic

Another reason for launching a blog is as a traffic generation mechanism for an existing business – whether online or offline – or both.

Adding a blog to your business website is a good strategy for increasing traffic to your site. Google and other search engines love blogs.

Your target audience – your prospects and your customers, can also benefit from your business website hosting a blog. A blog can add value to your website.

A Blog Can Help You Increase Sales

You can use it to communicate with customers and potential customers. And you can use a blog to convert visitors into customers who buy from you.

Especially if you are selling a product via direct marketing – in other words, directly via your website, then a blog is a great way to generate more sales.

In particular if you are running an affiliate marketing business, then a blog is a good traffic and sales conversion device.

But to achieve these aims – reaching your target market, attracting more visitor traffic, and converting that visitor traffic into paying customers, you need to know how to apply the principles of proper Content Marketing effectively.

Otherwise you risk just blogging away without getting much closer to achieving your marketing aims. You can end up getting “blogged down” as I call it.

The best way to learn how to use professional blogging for business is to join a blogging training course which teaches you proper Content Marketing techniques.

This is where Blog Marketing Academy can help.

It’s a practical training program and mastermind support group, started in 2006 by American David Risley.

David launched the Blog Marketing Academy to provide professional, practical training for new entrepreneurs in the skills of starting and running a successful online business.

Unlike many blogging training programs, the Blog Marketing Academy is based on the premise that you should utilize blogging, not primarily to sell advertising space, but rather as a MARKETING platform to sell products and services to your audience.

David realized that the key to building a successful business online is not found in blogging per se, but rather in using blogging as a content marketing technique to promote your business.

Content Marketing is the key to generating the maximum number of sales and revenue from your website.

The Blog Marketing Academy helps new entrepreneurs build their online marketing platform to sell their products and services to the people who need them.

It shows you how to utilize the full power of Content Marketing – blogging, information products, videos, podcasting, email marketing – to spread the word. The Academy is the ideal training program for small business owners, online marketers and bloggers.

The main part of the Academy training is a series of training assignments designed to get you actively applying and actually USING the information that you are learning.

You receive active support from the Academy staff, including David Risley himself.

This is truly interactive training which David takes seriously.

So not only are you learning about the practice of online business, you are actively applying the skills and receiving mentoring and feedback as you do so.
